Interim CTO

Interim CTO cover for periods of disruption, transition and transformation. Available now. London hybrid or UK remote.

An interim CTO holds the seat while a business works out what it needs permanently, or covers it through a period where continuity of technology leadership matters more than anything else. The brief is usually the same: keep delivery moving, give the board and the executive team a clear read on risk, and leave the organisation in a better state than you found it.

I've held senior technology roles in financial services and X-Tech through some of the fastest technological and commercial change of the last two decades, and scaled organisations from start-up into the FTSE 250. That covers running complex systems of record alongside incubators: keeping the show on the road while building for what comes next.

Interim work suits organisations that need a named, accountable technology leader in place quickly, with no ramp-up spent learning the basics of running a technology function under pressure.

The practical side of the seat draws on the Cambridge Judge Business School CTO Programme, the Imperial College Professional Certificate in AI and Machine Learning, and ongoing work applying agentic workflows and AI-augmented engineering. Engagements run as advisory, interim or hands-on work, London hybrid or UK remote, and can start as soon as the brief is clear.

Track record

Scaled organisations from start-up into the FTSE 250, across financial services and SaaS.

What this covers

Leadership continuity
Leadership oversight for critical capabilities during periods of disruption, transition and transformation.
Delivery system design
Improve predictability by clarifying intent, reducing variability, removing constraints, and improving flow.
Project recovery
Stabilise failing initiatives with a clear recovery brief, rapid risk triage, and a practical path to delivery or controlled closure.
Modernisation
Reduce ambiguity in legacy systems so agentic workflows, observability, and governance can operate reliably.

Interim vs fractional: which one? Interim means the seat is held full time for a defined period, usually because it is empty or because a transformation needs one accountable owner throughout. If the need is ongoing senior guidance at a lower weekly commitment rather than a full-time seat, fractional CTO support is the better fit.
